Meet our local chosen charity

As you all know, BETA International’s chosen charity is going to be a bit different in 2016. We have decided to support two – The Brooke, a worldwide animal welfare organisation, and Hope Pastures, a small, regional set-up that rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes horses, ponies and donkeys in Yorkshire. Both charities are now busy planning for their appearance at the show in January.

Kim Pengelly, Hope Pastures’ fundraiser and PR co-ordinator, popped into the office the other day for a cuppa and to invite us over to meet some of the volunteers working at the centre in north Leeds – and the equine guests, of course!

Every horse has its own story and it is humbling to hear. Some find their way to the centre after their owners have been unable to cope while others have found sanctuary and safety as the result of a successful welfare case.

The team at Hope Pastures spends a great deal of time on education, organising group visits for everyone from Brownies to those being treated at centres for drug and alcohol addiction – anyone who wouldn’t normally come into contact with horses, ponies and donkeys.

Members of its yard team also dedicate time to helping local traveller groups understand how to look after their animals and the charity has started a castration appeal to help tackle over-breeding problems at source.

We’re sure you’ll agree that there’s a lot of important and heart-warming stuff going on there. We’ll tell you more after our visit.

Bye for now!
